Oh, the weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful! There’s nothing quite like redecorating during the holiday season. Clients want a cozy home to retire to during blustery weather, which gives you the opportunity to play with a wide array of textures and colors inspired by stunning winter landscapes.
Whether your clients secretly dream of a lumberjack-chic living room, complete with red and green color palette, or love the stark simplicity of a blue and silver winter wonderland, these décor ideas will help you winterize any interior with style. So let it snow!
Nature inspired décor
Simply take a walk outside to gather your inspiration for this one. Look for elements of the outdoors you can borrow for your indoor winter getaway design. Birch logs, pine centerpieces, and winter berries are all lovely (and fragrant!) décor ideas.
Bring the outdoors in by making winter flora the heart of holiday crafts. Arrange branches or twigs artfully in an oversize glass vase. Winter
wreaths can be made from a variety of different flowers, sprigs, and ribbons. Create centerpieces with pinecones and chestnuts in smaller mason jars. A potted Christmas tree can be decorated for the holidays and replanted in the spring. Temporary wall decals are a versatile way of creating a seasonal
mural. But opt for a higher-end product. Santa Clause stickers are for giftwrap only!
Homespun fabrics
Keep guests warm and toasty with woven fabrics. Stick with plenty of plush pillows in earth tones (the classics!), but throw in some bold red accessories for some extra drama. Think mohair, knits, and chunky throws for your clients to curl up in once temperatures start to drop outside. Likewise, make sure feet stay nice and warm by incorporating a comfortable rug.
Add in a touch of seasonal whimsy with red and green flannel. For a chic twist on the rustic look, go for pillows with a contemporary graphic. Leaf motifs, prints with deer and wise owls—cozy can still mean trendy! Suede or leather accents will add an ultra-luxurious touch. With the fireplace crackling and an abundance of warm throws, no one will be venturing away from the sofa into the great outdoors anytime soon. A cozy window treatment makes the perfect bow to tie it all together.
Holiday touches
Transform a blah fireplace into the focal point of your design. It’s the perfect canvas for all your festive touches! Make stockings stylish by minimizing clutter and adding a few eye-catching ornaments. Keep tinsel tasteful by limiting to the mantle. If your clients are particularly adventurous, use spray snow to dress up windows—but don’t overdo it. Your faux snow should be a fun touch without actually obtruding the flow of natural light.
Festive décor does not have to mean kitschy—unless an over-the-top Christmas village is what your client requests. For the understated outdoor-inspired design, think in terms of color palette and work from there. Cool-toned grays and silvers will pop on bright winter days. Play up chandeliers and incorporate plenty of candles to bring warmth back in. Tie winter scarfs around pillows for a homey look.
Rustic accents
Give your clients a comfortable cabin feel with earthy wood accents. Use pine in various ways, such as in coasters or picture frames, for a winter lodge look without actually having to move to the mountains. If your client is committed to the rustic look, use wood planks for an attention-grabbing accent wall. A coffee or dining room table made from solid wood will also make a grand visual statement.
Vintage décor is another great way to incorporate wood. Old snowshoes or a pair of skis propped up against the wall are a fun nod to older generations. Refurbish an old winter toboggan for a fabulously chic conversation starter. Lanterns are a terrific option for those cold winter nights by the fireside. If you have a carpenter handy, tree stumps can be made into gorgeous lodge seating. Even faux antlers can be made from
resin for the client who wants cabin chic without the cabin.
Frosty embellishments
For a glitzy take on winter, bring on the
sparkle and shine. Spray-paint branches in a silvery metallic for a festive touch. Light glittery votive candles in the evening to create the look of a luminous winter night. Snowflake ornaments and silver candle holders are a fun component for an extra Jack Frost-inspired design.
Draw from your winter landscape: silver buckets with spray-painted branches will contrast nicely with the texture of soft fabrics. Mirrors invoke the image of a frozen lake. Brass fixtures and accessories are a nice finishing touch for clients who prefer a warmer color palette! For the ultimate winter wonderland, work within a cool-toned color palette: snowy throws, white wreaths, and frosty ornaments. String clear fairy lights around stair banisters and greenery centerpieces for a dazzling icy finish.
